Imagine driving through Harlingen on South 77 Sunshine Strip on a balmy Sunday afternoon, hungry and looking for a place to eat, when all of a sudden you spot an old home with an unassuming sign that reads, Laurel Park BISTRO.
Immediately you pull over, google, and find out more about this eatery; Modern American, French inspired “BRUNCH” in the Rio Grande Valley. Well, that alone should catch your attention, but then as you read further, discover that this home has a history rich in tradition and meriting attention. This bistro is owned by a native son - Navy veteran and head chef, Diego Benitez.
Those of you who read our reviews know that our search for food takes us from the finest to the humblest of places, we seek establishments that prepare and serve their food infused with passion and brimming with excellence – nothing more, nothing less. And, inasmuch as we are patriots and support our men in uniform, our hats off and a salute to chef Benitez for an unexpected and wonderful treat.
First, we started off with “Eggs Benedict” – perfectly poached eggs with a flavorful slice of Canadian bacon served on ‘house made’ buttermilk biscuits topped with a delicious Hollandaise sauce, and served with a crisp side salad. The next dish got even better; A “Quiche Lorraine” made with a buttery, crispy crust with smoky bacon, onions, and a melted cheese egg custard served with a side salad as well. Simply magnifique!
In between the meals we sipped on a cup of rich cocoa that was most decadent, and enjoyed a cup of craft coffee served in a French press that was perfectly matched for the occasion.
After enjoying the breakfast selections, we moved on to other items on the menu, ordering their “Mac and Cheese” which was served in a decent sized copper plated bowl, keeping the cheese hot and gooey, and OMG, the bechamel cheese sauce was to-die-for! Honestly the best mac and cheese served in the RGV – bar none.
And to complete our culinary experience, we ordered their classic “Chicken Pot Pie.” Folks, we’re NOT talking Marie Calendars or Kentucky Fried chicken pot pies. We’re talking about the best chicken pot pie you’ll find within a 300-mile radius. Made from scratch, a flaky crust stuffed with tender chunks of chicken breast, fresh carrots, peas, potatoes, in a creamy savory sauce that is ‘finger lickin good’!
Overall, we have nothing bad to say about our experience - the service was excellent - with friendly people and genuine smiles that made our visit most memorable.
So next time you’re looking for something different, but not too different, check out this quaint eatery and trust that you’ll be back for more.
Again, we thank restaurateurs like Diego Benitez for taking the risk of bringing a piece of the outside world to the Rio Grande Valley…BRAVO!
